The Khmer Empire was one of the greatest empires in Southeast Asia, ruling vast territories from parts of present-day China to the South China Sea. The empire flourished for more than 400 years, from the 9th to the 15th century A.D. In the 15th century, the Khmer king decided to move the capital to present-day Phnom Penh for several reasons, including political instability, foreign invasions, and changing environmental conditions that made Angkor less suitable for settlement.

Angkor was the political, religious, and agricultural heart of the empire. Today, hundreds of temples remain scattered throughout the region, reflecting the greatness of Khmer architecture and civilization. These temples were built to honor the two major religions practiced during different periods of the empire: Hinduism and Buddhism.

One of the most magnificent and famous temples in Angkor is Angkor Wat. It is Cambodia’s most iconic landmark, one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world, and widely recognized as a masterpiece of Khmer civilization. Located in the culturally and historically rich province of Siem Reap, Angkor Wat is also considered one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world.
